about me

There was a time, once, where I was born. The experience was traumatic for all involved. Thankfully, I've gotten past that now, and I'm currently a coffee-fueled, sarcastic 20-year-old living in Colorado.

I am a writer, a spoonie, and a devoted fan of a ridiculous amount of things. I'm also a major fan of superheroes (Marvel especially), and my favorite stories involve light triumphing over darkness, something that's encouraged me throughout my life. For me, fictional stories, characters, and worlds have been an escape, something that makes life a little easier to swallow. Stories have always grounded me, and as a part of that, I both consume and produce them at a probably-alarming rate. That is to say: reading, watching TV, and writing are three of my favorite things.

(Obsessed with Marvel? No. Not me.)

I've been writing stories ever since I can remember, and it's something I still love to do today. I love to write novels of all kinds, but most of them have to have an element of weird. Writing helps me process who I am, what life is, and how to be a human.

“You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you.” ― Ray Bradbury

As an extension of my love for stories, I founded The Fangirl Initiative, where I talk about all things nerd culture along with some awesome contributors and quite a lot of gifs.

Additionally, as an extension of my love for writing, I run the Beautiful People blog link-up with Cait from Paper Fury and the A Novel Idea link-up with Ashley from Ashley Aspires. Encouraging writers to just write so they can tell their story is important to me!

And my fandom and writing collide with YAvengers, where I write under the name of Bucky Barnes.

I aim to be lion-hearted, but my hands still shake and my voice isn't quite loud enough.

At the heart of it all, there are a few causes that are extremely important to me.

I have anxiety and a passion for reducing the stigma around mental illness. Because of this, I make graphics with Libero Network every month.

I also have fibromyalgia and PCOS and a passion for reducing the stigma around chronic illness. Because of this, I write about it over at Young and Sick.

I have a passion for reminding girls that they are enough just as they are. Because of this, I contribute writing and graphics to the blog Youer than You, founded by my friend Ashley.

My desire is to authentically discuss the dark, gritty issues of life, yet at the same time, I never want to forget the drops of sunshine that make life worth living.

It has been a beautiful fight. Still is.  Charles Bukowski

(My favorite thing in life is my flannel shirt.)

Important, random facts: My favorite things are stars, superheroes, and the ocean. I am secretly dating Sam Wilson. Tony Stark and Bucky Barnes have made me cry on multiple occasions. Though I am a self-professed dreamer and resident of Owl City, I also relate wholeheartedly to Ron Swanson, Nick Miller, and Grumpy Cat. I'm like dark chocolate (bittersweet), I'm an INFP, and I'm still figuring things out. In case you think I'm put-together, I will clear it up for you: I am actually a human disaster. I can't cook, I'm freaked out by life in general, and I still don't know what being an adult means.

I'm socially awkward and have often been mistaken for a twelve-year-old. I'm also pretty much Tina Belcher.

But I'm learning to love myself, love my life, and write about all of it right here. I've been running Further Up and Further In since 2006, and it's become my online haven, a natural extension of my dreams and desires. What are those dreams and desires? What is my manifesto?

I want everyone to realize their own brave, badass potential. I want them to hold tightly to their dreams and to never forget that life is awful and beautiful and terrible but the best thing to ever happen. I want everyone to be a superhero. I want everyone to love themselves. I want the world to be a better place. (I also want to be Natasha Romanoff, but we'll see how that goes.)

Do you want to join me? Okay, great. Welcome to the Dream Team. Let's do this.

The name thing: Okay, okay, you got me. Sky isn't my real name. Kylie is. But what on earth? Why? What gives?

My first name starts with an S. My middle name is Kylie. Mash them together and you get Skylie. Or, Sky. This nickname has personal significance to me because my late Grandma Ruth came up with it, and I've promised to honor her with my writing.

So, just so the record is clear, here are all my names: I've gone by Sky Destrian, Sky Walden, Kylie Walden, and everything in between. I answer to all of them. But let me stop you right there. You may know all my names, but I'm not going to give you my social security number.

“I would rather be ashes than dust!
I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot.

I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

The function of man is to live, not to exist.

I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them.

I shall use my time.
